Shalom Mutongi, Mid-Kent College

Having only been in the UK for two years, Shalom was eager to get involved in their local community and build new connections. Taking part in the Good for Me Good for FE volunteering award gave them the opportunity to work alongside classmates to research and support local charities.

Although it was challenging at first to find placements, their determination led to supporting three different organisations. Along the way, they developed skills in teamwork, time management and problem-solving, and even stepped into a team-leading role. The experience boosted Shalom’s confidence and helped them secure a place on the Level 3 Enterprise and Entrepreneurship course.

Shalom says:

“I really enjoyed taking part in the Good for Me Good for FE volunteering award. During this time I was researching with my college friends to find volunteering opportunities we could use and support locally.

“The skills I learnt were time management, team building and resolving issues that we had. For example, it was difficult to find places to volunteer at first, but we kept going and we were able to support three local charities. This means a great deal to me as I have only been in the country for two years and this opportunity has shown me what help and support is out there for everyone who may need it.

“It was fun and enjoyable and each of the charities were different and needed different support. Working in our small groups we supported the charities, who were very pleased and welcomed us back in the future.

“Working as a team has meant my confidence has grown and I ended up with a team leading role to support my team, and this helped me to secure a place on the Level 3 Enterprise and Entrepreneurship course”
